Cheney protesters should pull their heads in

February 25th 2007 22:15
Much has been made of Vice President Cheney’s recent visit to Sydney. Predictably enough the protesting fraternity have tried to swing public opinion in their favour. They cite over zealous policing as the reason for the drama surrounding supposedly legitimate protest in the CBD late last week.

If these people were generally concerned about world peace and sharing the love as so many of their sweatshop produced t shirts would have us believe then they would believe in civil order and respect officers of the law. Unfortunately they seem to think that dissent for a war that have been going for over four years entitles them to ignore the laws of their own country.

If I disagree with my landlord or my boss am I entitled to block off his driveway, swear at his wife and argue with police when they come to request a return to normal behaviour? It’s called harassment and its something police officers have to deal with every time a so called legitimate protest descends into a free-for-all that is unacceptable to the vast majority of society.

Why should police officers have to deal with a large mob intent on creating headlines through violence and disorder to push their own political agenda. That isn’t protest, that is making a public nuisance. Police officers have a duty to serve society and maintain order and stability. An irrational anti-American crowd intent on mayhem, abuse and criminal damage should be bought to account.

Spokespeople from the protestor groups crying foul over heavy handed policing fool nobody with their propaganda. Police officers are right to take the approach they do in these situations, after all organised protest does not have the strongest track record.
