Two pieces of fruit a day is two too many

If the fruit and vegie growers and their cohorts of well versed nutritionists are to be taken at their word we would all be dead of a little known condition called fruit and vege poisoning.
Five serves of veggies a day and two serves of fruit is the recommendation.
Who are they kidding? How is it possible to put this much food into your system and still have room to gorge on chips, kebabs, pies, footie franks and vegemite toast, the staple foods of any champion Aussie athlete.
OK, I will admit to trying fruit. In fact I took the opportunity to use Lent, traditionally a period of personal sacrifice to give it a go. Last year during Lent I managed to comfortably do without chips, chocolate and sausages (my three dietary vices). I needed a bigger challenge.
Working on the theory that I was sacrificing my dietary habits (usually 2 pieces of fruit a year rather than per day) I tried to have two pieces of fruit every day for the 40 days of Lent.
Little did I realise the effects of fruit poisoning. I twitched, I had violent mood swings and I had nightmares centred around being attacked by massive bananas (OK so, the last one was stepping over the mark).
Actually none of these symptoms actually happened and for a while I quite enjoyed the fruit, bananas, apples and dried apricots being the only residual survivors from years of non fruit eating.
Unfortunately though I’d bitten off more than I could chew (excuse the pun) and defeat after nine days was a bitter pill of chips, chocolate and sausages.
Luckily for me I am a fit, healthy and otherwise normal 29 year old male, who thinks that all this pressure for eating fruit and veg is indefensible. Rise up, defy popular thinking and eat what you feel like. I tried the dark side and it wasn’t for me.
