Soiled space nappies and soiled reputations
February 13th 2007 09:20
Acclaimed NASA astronaut and mother of three Lisa Nowak drove 1500 kilometres in nappies so as not to have to stop for toilet breaks and allegedly tried to kidnap and murder a rival for the affections of a fellow jet setting pilot.
The woman is clearly nuts or so any normal person would assume but all is not what it might seem.
High achieving professionals in high risk jobs place themselves under extraordinary strain that mere mortals like the rest of us cannot understand. Strapping oneself into a steel tube with equally remarkable individuals and then hurtling deep into space is a unique scenario, one that is bound to bring on a different response in certain individuals.
For those who engage in these types of missions together the bonds formed are unlike any other standard friendship. Nowak stated that she did not have a sexual relationship with the object of her affections but that they had a special bond. Almost certainly a special bond was forged through hours of training and the combined experience of putting your life at risk for the pursuit of knowledge.
Furthermore adult nappies are nothing new in the astronaut game and with the number of safety checks and NASA’s chequered technical record nor is sitting in the one position for hours on end. Differentiating between fantasy and real life is likely to be difficult for someone operating in these most extraordinary daily circumstances.
Who knows what went on between Nowak and the object of her affections high in the sky. What we do know is that it is unlikely that Nowak’s star will shine for too much longer after her reputation has been soiled beyond repair.
